Another exercise that suited my taste for playing around with ideas were photos ‘in the style of…’, like the ones I did for three special issues of French Vogue – about Alfred Hitchcock, Alain Resnais and Peter Ustinov respectively – and for a special issue of Glamour USA, about famous cinema directors. The game was to identify what is typical about an author – his characters, his situations, his obsessions – and then adapt it, preferably with tongue a little bit in cheek, to the ordinary tasks of a magazine, such as the presentation of dresses, shoes, perfumes or underwear. ‘Pastiche!’ Cartier-Bresson would have objected. ‘Post-modernism!’ others might have claimed, some years later… In any case, the game appealed to me, to the point that I ended up playing it on my own, for some of my personal projects.
