Paris

1951 - 1984

Introduction

I came to Paris for the first time in the summer of 1951. During that stay I met Henri Cartier-Bresson, who advised me to switch from the Rollei to the Leica ("you don't carry your eyes on your belly" ). I settled in Paris four years later, and spent much time photographing in the streets, on speculation. In 1956 and 1957, I did a series of city-scapes with a 400 mm tele-lens, which were first published by the Swiss magazine CAMERA (then directed by Romeo Martinez). Many photographs from this period have been exhibited at the MUSÉE CARNAVALET, in Paris, in 1996-97 ("Paris-Londres, London-Paris"), and are now part of the permanent collection of that museum.
  35 photographs are presented here.
About 70 images of this series are available from my digital files, many more are among my negatives.
