India

1952 - 53

Introduction

From Pakistan I proceeded to India, where I lived for a year and a half, travelling around the country in search for "good stories". When I thought I had found one, I had the negs processed and a few series of prints made by a local lab, then typed some text and mailed the packages to magazines and press agencies. Most of these stories got published, by such magazines as PICTURE POST in London, MATCH in Paris or DIE WOCHE in Zurich, and the incoming fees allowed me to continue on my travels. The most successful of these stories was one about a saintly man, Vinoba Bhave, who walked from village to village, preaching non-violence and urging the rich to give some of their land to the poor (characteristically of India, some of them actually did!)
  15 photographs are presented here.
About 70 images of this series are available from my digital files, many more are among my negatives.
