I visited Japan twice: the first time in 1963, on my trip around the world for REVUE (see also Time Machine), the second in 1988, to attend a retrospective of my work in a Tokyo gallery. I must admit that on both occasions I was a little disappointed by the photos I took - as if they were not quite at the height of the enthusiasm that I felt while taking them. Possibly the modernity of Japan - which to me was so fascinating - is more difficult to photograph than it's traditions.
