Fashion for Italian Vogue

1980 - 86

Introduction

Working on personal projects brought about a definite change in my fashion photography, inasmuch as I felt less bound to give continuous proofs of originality and inventiveness in that field. As far as the photographic results are concerned, I am still not sure whether the change was for the better or the worse, but there is no doubt that to fashion editors, models, hair stylists and assistants, I seemed more relaxed and easier to deal with than before. I began aiming at more intimate images, in which the light, the textures and the attitude of the model would matter more than situations or interactions.

ITALIAN VOGUE was one of my favourite magazines. In the course of the seventies, Milano had become the second fashion capital of the world - if not the first. If one happened to be there during the fashion season, one could see famous international models at every bus stop, and photographers from New York, Paris or London in every trattoria. But what I liked best about working for ITALIAN VOGUE were the fashion editors: most of them were good-looking and well educated, never as pretentious as the Americans, as hard-boiled as the French, as vague as the British or as stolid as the Germans, always ready to take upon themselves a change of program and to improvise alternative solutions.
