After the folding of TWEN, Willy Fleckhaus spent some years teaching, and no doubt thinking about the successes and failures of his magazine. The results of his thoughts became visible in a new magazine which he created, as a weekly supplement to the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FAZ). When he showed me the first issues, I realized that he had become more mature, but at the same time even more inventive, then at the time of TWEN, and I was delighted to contribute. Unfortunately, Fleckhaus died a few months later. He was replaced by Georg Pospischil, his student and assistant, who in time became a excellent art director in his own right. During the following years, I did many photo stories for FAZ Magazin, including documentary work in Europe, America and Asia. But what I enjoyed most were the fashion sequences, which I was allowed to set up and photograph without any interference from fashion editors. I don't want this to sound as if I had any grudge against these ladies: but what happens in most magazines is that the fashion editor's job is not so much to choose the prettiest dresses of the best designers, as to pick the least hideous ones of the designers who buy most advertising space. Then, when she has eventually made her choice, the fashion editor calls the photographer and says something like: "Don't tell me what you think about these rags, just photograph them." But this wasn't the case at FAZ Magazin, which at the time didn't depend on ads from the fashion trade: therefore they didn't have a fashion editor, and I was free to choose the dresses that would look best in my photographs. |
