Portraits of Trees

1976 - 86

Introduction

1976 was the year when I emerged from a long period of self-doubt, which had led me to question my very involvement in photography, both as a photo-journalist and as a fashion photographer. I spent part of that summer in my small property in Provence, pruning trees and putting on paper the few memories of my childhood that I could recollect. At some point, I realized that most of my memories were somehow connected with branches and leaves, and this gave me the idea of a photographic essay about trees. This work would'nt be intended for articles in magazines, but for something as personal as a book or an exhibition: for once I would be an author.

The project took several years and made me travel through many parts of Europe and North America, whenever I could find some free time and afford the expenses. I like to think that these photographs are like portraits, especially when the tree is isolated and seems free to express his personality, by extending his branches into all directions. This essay has been published in two books (see "Published books") and shown in many exhibitions. The greatest satisfaction I get from it, is when people say to me: "after having seen your photographs, I don't look at trees in the same way."

  36 photographs are presented here.
90 images of this series are available from my digital files. Many more are among my transparencies.
